Designing a secure and empowering online platform for black femme survivors
Designing a secure and empowering online platform for black femme survivors
Hersana is a UK-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting Black femme survivors of gender-based violence. Recognising the need for a digital presence that resonates with their community, Hersana aimed to create a vibrant and secure online platform. The objective was to design a website that not only communicates effectively with their target audience but also serves as a digital safe space, ensuring users feel understood, supported, and protected.
Collaborating with brand designers RedNine, we translated Hersana's new brand identity into a digital experience that prioritises user safety and accessibility. Key features of the solution included:
Password-protected safe space: A dedicated area for survivors to access resources securely.
Live chat service: Real-time support tailored to the needs of Black femme survivors.
Quick exit functionality: Allows users to leave the site swiftly if needed.
Email-free account creation: Enables users to create accounts without email confirmation, maintaining anonymity while ensuring security.
To ensure the platform's effectiveness, we conducted user testing focusing on navigation ease and the speed of the quick exit feature.
Technologies used:
Umbraco CMS: For flexible and robust content management.
Eventbrite API: To manage and promote events seamlessly.
Launched during Black History Month, Hersana's new website introduced two significant services: a secure digital safe space and a live chat feature. These additions have:
Enhanced the charity's visibility and outreach.
Provided essential information and guidance to an underserved community.
Empowered Black femme survivors by offering a platform designed with their specific needs in mind.
