User Experience

Usability testing

Take a user centric approach and speak to your users to really understand their needs and goals. Gain in-depth insight to how your users engage with your product or service to make sure it’s meeting their expectations.

Why do usability testing?

Now more than ever usability testing is so important to make sure your customer’s needs are always being considered. With technology changing so quickly are your users moving at the same pace and will new features that you’re considering meet their needs or fall flat and damage you brand image?

Without seeing and hearing first hand from your target audience how will you know what works for them and what doesn’t. By considering usability testing early on in the process of products and services you can remove costly mistakes later in the process. Regular testing can help to keep the vision for a product focused and make sure the user is never forgotten

When to do usability testing

Usability testing should be regularly conducted to really know if your product or service is meeting the needs of your users. Without taking a user centred design approach the voice of your users could get lost and your product and service then doesn’t meet their needs. Below we have listed some of the key stages of when you should consider usability testing but ideally you would want a regular usability programme in place to make sure you understand your users

Process we take

We follow a phased approach to define and develop a comprehensive digital strategy, starting from a vision and moving towards detailed execution. Here’s an overview of our process:

“When developing our new website, our aim was to create something that reflected all our donors and supporters. User testing was invaluable in providing those insights and highlighting gaps, allowing us to refine our plan to better address our supporters’ needs. We are really proud of our new website and the feedback we’ve received has been tremendous.”

Usability testing FAQs

Usability testing is the process of evaluating how easy and intuitive your website, app, or product is for real users. It involves observing users as they interact with your product to identify any issues or areas where the user experience can be improved.

Usability testing ensures that your product is easy to use and meets user expectations. It helps uncover friction points, confusion, or errors that may prevent users from completing tasks, which can lead to a better overall experience and improved conversion rates.

Usability testing can be conducted in person or remotely. Users are given specific tasks to complete on your website or app while we observe their interactions and gather feedback. We analyse their behaviour to identify any usability issues or areas that need improvement.

There are several types of usability testing, including:

  • Moderated testing: A researcher guides users through tasks and asks questions to understand their thought process.
  • Unmoderated testing: Users complete tasks on their own without real-time guidance, providing more natural interactions.
  • Remote testing: Users participate in the test from their own location, which can offer more realistic insights into how they use the product in real-world conditions.
  • In-person testing: Users are observed in a controlled environment while interacting with your product.

A typical usability test session can last between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on the complexity of the tasks. The entire usability testing process, including planning, execution, and analysis, may take a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the scope of the project.

Users are asked to perform tasks that represent real-world scenarios, such as navigating a website, searching for specific information, completing a purchase, or filling out a form. The tasks are designed to mimic typical user behaviours so we can see how easily they can be completed.

Usability testing helps reveal issues like confusing navigation, unclear calls-to-action, broken links, or inefficient workflows. It also highlights what’s working well, such as features that users find intuitive or helpful.

After testing, we analyse the data and compile a report outlining key findings, usability issues, and actionable recommendations for improvement. These insights inform the next steps in enhancing your product's user experience.
